Gamle Munch, Tøyengata 53, 0563 Oslo, Norge
Join us on a musical journey through a thought-provoking terrain that speaks to us about love, life and death, finding a place in the world, feeling exiled, homeless, and betrayed.
About life’s great emotions, great disappointments, great hopes, and great questions.
About a wanderer.
About the end of the year.
This fall, over 60 students from Edvard Munch VGS — in collaboration with Eivind Buene, Christian Eggen, and Oslo Sinfonietta — have created their own version of Franz Schubert's song cycle Winterreise (1827), this almost 200-year-old iconic work about an "emotional 'journey' through both an external and internal cold landscape" (snl.no) that continues to captivate and affect us.
Schubert’s Winterreise has inspired many artists to create their own interpretations of the songs. The starting point for this project was Eivind Buene’s remarkable Schubert Lounge (2019); Buene’s attempt to claim Schubert’s songs, making them his 'own.' In Winter Lounge, students from Edvard Munch High School were invited to choose the musical expressions they wished to give to Winterreise. The students not only created the compositions and reinterpretations but also curated, performed, staged, and produced this spectacular evening where Gamle Munch's lecture hall is transformed into a parlor that invites us in from the cold.
Winter Lounge is part of the project FABER, where Oslo Sinfonietta invites children and young people to create their own artistic expressions together with the country’s leading contemporary musicians.
FABER is supported by Sparebankstiftelsen DNB, Furestiftelsen, and Kulturtanken.
